VA disability compensation offers a monthly tax-free payment to Veterans who got sick or injured while serving in the military and to Veterans whose service made an existing condition worse. You may qualify for VA disability benefits for physical conditions (like a chronic illness or injury) and mental health conditions (like PTSD) that developed before, during, or after service.
The Military Injury Relief Fund (MIRF) is a program that provides a one time payment to veterans of Iraq and/or Afghanistan who sustained injury or disease while serving in the combat area. The payment is tax free, and varies year to year. The program runs from July 1 through June 30 of each year.
Ohio provides the Ohio War Orphan & Severely Disabled Veterans Scholarship Program (60% service connected), which provides financial grants to the eligible children of some Ohio veterans. Although this program does not provide total cost for education, many who receive its benefits are also eligible for educational assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Ohio Promise is an educational program that allows any veteran to attend any state supported school in the State of Ohio and pay in-state resident rates.
The Veterans Pension program provides monthly payments to wartime Veterans who meet certain age or disability requirements, and who have income and net worth within certain limits.
The Homestead Exemption provides qualified disabled veterans, or a surviving spouse, a reduction in property taxes on the dwelling that is that individual’s principal place of residence and up to one acre of land of which an eligible individual is an owner.
The primary function of the veterans program is to assist eligible veterans, including disabled veterans, campaign veterans, and other veterans and eligible persons in alleviating unemployment and underemployment. Policies and programs are implemented to increase opportunities for veterans to obtain employment, job training, intensive services and assistance in employment and training programs.
The department assures veterans are treated with courtesy and respect at all offices and that veterans are given priority of service in referrals to job openings and other services. Local Veterans’ Employment Representative (LVERs) specialists provide business outreach services and educate One-Stop partners on veteran’s issues. Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Program (DVOP) specialists provide intensive services and outreach to those veterans who are unable to obtain employment through regular One-Stop Core Services.
The State of Ohio provides several benefits to totally disabled veterans, to include free license plates, hunting and fishing licenses, and others. Purple Heart veterans may obtain Purple Heart license plates for motorcycles, trucks, or cars.
